Sandra Miller

Philips
Technical Writer
Carlsbad, CA USA
I have spent the past three decades working as a technical writer and manager in the medical device industry, specifically critical care ventilators, in the U.S. and Europe. I have developed user (operator) and service manuals, product catalogs, and other marketing materials. I have coordinated translations of manuals and software. I also create artwork for labels.

Lately my duties have expanded outside of what I consider the typical job description for a technical writer. I have become involved with labeling standards and regulations for medical devices, and I write labeling requirement specifications, labeling verification protocols, and labeling verification reports. I oversee labeling verifications, and am involved with usability testing (validation) of our manuals. I have also developed a terminology glossary with preferred English words as well as translations.

Currently my department is in the process of producing our first manuals using Madcap Flare. We would also like to incorporate the use of Acrolinx into our development process for the benefit of our global, nonnative--as well as native--English-speaking customer base. These are the topics that excite me most at the moment.

On the side, I've been editing a primer on ventilators, which will be published by Oxford University Press later this year.

if you are interested in any of these topics, please find me. I'd love to talk. Oh, and I am a fluent German speaker :-)
